Suivi de pollution

Un programme de surveillance pour la côte de la Colombie-Britannique, Canada, Pollution Tracker, documente les niveaux et tendances de centaines de contaminants préoccupants dans les moules et les sédiments océaniques côtiers.

Pollution Tracker

Pollution Tracker is the first coast-wide, integrated marine pollution monitoring program in British Columbia. Sampling and analysis along the B.C. coast provides an overview of pollution and helps to guide best practices, management responses, and remediation. Pollution Tracker is a collaborative effort between Ocean Wise and coastal partners. Field sampling has been conducted by Ocean Wise scientists and partners, including First Nations, community groups, port authorities, and government agencies.

Ocean Wise launched Pollution Tracker in 2015 to generate high-quality contaminant data from sediment and mussel samples along the coast of British Columbia (BC). Phase 1 was completed in 2017, Phase 2 in 2020, and Phase 3 in 2023. Sites were chosen to reflect both remote and industrialized areas and aligned with partner interests. Samples were collected in collaboration with First Nations, port authorities, government agencies, and community groups, then analyzed by accredited labs.

From 2015 to 2023, partner support enabled the analysis of sediment from 79 sites and mussels from 49 sites across BC’s south, central, and north coasts. The data helped identify pollution sources, inform priorities, guide best practices, and support resource management.

The baseline dataset and monitoring network provide:

  • A foundation for early detection of emerging contaminants
  • Insights into contaminant risks to southern resident killer whales and other species
  • Information on contaminant levels in traditional seafoods for coastal First Nations
  • A basis for site- or species-specific assessments to support ecosystem and species recovery
  • A platform for collaboration among stakeholders concerned with coastal contamination

Results are available in our final technical report. Ocean Wise welcomes the use of this dataset to support further research and stewardship. Contact [email protected] for access or inquiries.
