Be Whale Wise while you fish with Ocean Wise's Sport Fisher's Guide

The Sport Fisher's Guide aims to facilitate safe and positive interactions between sport fishers and cetaceans.

The Sports Fisher’s Guide to Cetaceans in British Columbia is a resource developed by Ocean Wise to provide a single location for boater regulations, guidelines, reporting information and species information pertaining to whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) in B.C.

Recreational and sport fishing are an integral part of our coast and contribute nearly $300 million in revenue to B.C.’s economy. Many species are diminishing due to negative impacts such as climate change, habitat loss and negative vessel interactions. As active marine professionals, sports fishers play a key role in their protection. We hope this guide can serve to further protect the cetaceans found along the B.C. coast.

Ocean Wise is based in the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We work across Turtle Island and beyond, supporting Indigenous peoples in their vital work on ocean conservation and biodiversity whenever possible or as we are invited to.
