Adopt a Killer Whale!
Since 1992, The Ocean Wise Killer Whale Adoption Program has supported conservation-oriented research on wild killer whales. Your symbolic adoption will support efforts that safeguard these iconic ocean ambassadors.
Sentinels of the Sea
Ship strikes are the main driver of human-caused injury and death to large whales globally. Vessel traffic has increased by 300% in the past two decades and this number will continue to rise. As large vessels are increasingly transiting through prime whale habitat, the number of collisions with whales are becoming more and more frequent, with up to 20,000 fatal strikes annually (as of December 2024). The Whale Report Alert System (WRAS) is a cutting-edge conservation tool designed to protect whales from ship strikes and disturbance by alerting mariners to their presence in real time. The WRAS receives real-time data from a multitude of whale detection platforms and disseminates this information to mariners in a number of user-friendly ways

Our Global Impact
Our 750+ Ocean Wise Seafood partners are all over the world, and are as diverse as our oceans, lakes and rivers.
The WhaleReport Alert System has sent over 10,000 alerts to ships, helping them to avoid collisions with whales. You can help by reporting your whale sightings using the WhaleReport app.
In 2019 alone, volunteers for the Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanup program helped remove plastics and other litter from 3,937 km of shorelines.
Our mobile programs feature marine artifacts and hands-on interactive activities designed to encourage passion and care of our oceans and waterways.
Dive In
Ocean Wise established the Salmon Advisory Panel to address the challenge of identifying sustainable salmon options in British Columbia. Comprised of leading experts on B.C. salmon with diverse backgrounds, the Salmon Advisory Panel’s unique knowledge and guidance combined with Ocean Wise’s Rapid Assessment Standard is a huge step towards more Ocean Wise Recommendations for locally sourced salmon.
Since its launch in 2023, the yearly RAPSTA results have allowed Ocean Wise to provide sustainability ratings for over 100 additional seafood options . Turning “no information available” options into either an “Ocean Wise” or “Not Recommended” options, including the immensely popular B.C. Salmon
Ocean Wise is uniquely positioned to utilize its Rapid Assessment Standard and Salmon Advisory Panel to ensure that responsible fisheries are properly recognized. These new guidelines make it easier for businesses and consumers to choose salmon wisely, supporting local, sustainable fishers. This is particularly crucial for the complex situation of B.C. salmon.

Take Action for the Ocean
During every Shoreline Champions cleanup, not only is litter collected from the shorelines, but data is captured on our Data Cards. This valuable litter data gets added to our database of nearly 30 years' worth of cleanup data, which is open-access and has helped to inform policy and research to reduce plastic pollution.
